Rassurez-vous, ce n’est pas ma première fois. J’ai déjà rangé des bouquins dans une BU. Mais c’est la première fois depuis que notre 1er étage* a été rénové, cet été. Et c’est un plaisir, tellement c’est clair et bien pensé ce ré-aménagement.

Cet exercice me permet bien sûr de tester en vrai le(s) parcours que les utilisateurs doivent effectuer quand ils se lancent à la recherche d’un ouvrage et donc d’éprouver la logique de classement et la cohérence de la disposition (heureuse en l’occurrence) des rayons. Et je pense être un bon indicateur, puisque je n’effectue cet exercice que très rarement. Je n’ai donc pas le temps d’intégrer des automatismes qui fausseraient l’expérience. Ce petit exercice empirique s’est révélé très concluant: je ne me suis pas perdu, je n’ai pas dû demander ma route, je n’ai pas été contraint à des détours, je n’ai perdu aucun ouvrage en chemin et j’ai tout bien rangé. Mon problème est le suivant: ça me prend trop de temps, parce que je lis les 4e de couverture et parce que si je m’écoutais, j’embarquerais un livre sur cinq…

J’invite les e-only à ne pas négliger, si possible pour eux, ce genre d’excursion concrète, surtout s’ils sont en charge des services aux utilisateurs. Ça permet de garder les pieds sur terre…

Les bibliothèques de l’université du Michigan testent le CMS LibGuides pour créer leurs tutoriels interactifs. Dans le cadre de leur étude de faisabilité (d’utilisabilité) “Usability in the Library”.

Elles ont publié récemment deux documents: le premier aborde les habitudes de recherche d’un panel d’utilisateurs et le second tend à montrer que le vocabulaire utilisé pour désigner ces tutoriels est loin d’être compris comme il le devrait.

Science overlay maps: a new tool for research policy and library management

“We present a novel approach to visually locate bodies of research within the sciences, both at each moment of time and dynamically. This article describes how this approach fits with other efforts to locally and globally map scientific outputs. We then show how these science overlay maps help benchmark, explore collaborations, and track temporal changes, using examples of universities, corporations, funding agencies, and research topics. We address conditions of application, with their advantages, downsides and limitations. Overlay maps especially help investigate the increasing number of scientific developments and organisations that do not fit within traditional disciplinary categories. We make these tools accessible to help researchers explore the ongoing socio-cognitive transformation of science and technology systems.”

High order literacy for the 21st century – improving the quality of library engagement

“It is not just universities that are changing rapidly in the 21st Century, but the very nature and fundamental techniques of research itself. In these circumstances there is a state of almost continual deficit in the skills and literacies needed to work with new data, new tools, and unprecedented volumes of raw material with which to work. To the extent that universities libraries have seen information literacy as central to their mission, there is a need to define what exactly those literacies encompass. This must be done in order to make the necessary innovations to improve the quality of the library’s engagement with the academy in this internationally recognised challenge.”

Google is not perfect

Dans ce billet, on pose et on tente de répondre à cette question qu’on entend souvent: avons-nous encore besoin réellement de classification? Eh bien oui (mais je ne vous apprends rien).

Voici la conclusion du billet:

“In short, Google is great when you know what you are looking for, when it’s not that important, and when you have plenty of time. In other words, for casual leisure searching. For any search that requires discovery and exploration, certainty, completeness, and precision, and when you want the right results quickly, you need classification.

The future of classification will be one of increasing automation, but that means the indexer or cataloguer’s job becomes more sophisticated and complex. Indexers of the future will be constructing rules for ontology and taxonomy building, training systems for specialised domains, and investigating errors in the automated systems. This may mark a change in the nature of traditional jobs, but it certainly does not mean the end of classification. Taxonomies have been around for millennia, they aren’t likely to disappear overnight.

The very fact that Google engineers are busily working on content analysis, language processing, and other new methods in order to increase the amount of classification Google can apply to its results (e.g. How can we improve our understanding of low level representations of images that goes beyond bag of words modeling?) shows that even the master of the free text search recognises more can be done.”

Le premier: “How Scholarly is Google Scholar? A Comparison to Library Databases” est un pre-print à paraître dans la revue College & Research Libraries. Il indique que le contenu de G. Scholar n’est pas moins “académique” que celui des bases de données auxquelles les bibs sont généralement abonnées.

Le second: “An Exploratory Study of Google Scholar” est paru en 2007. Il indiquait que les mises à jour dans G. Scholar laissaient à désirer et que l’accès au document en texte intégral n’était pas toujours gagné.

Conclusion: toujours s’abreuver à plusieurs sources

Il est vrai qu’on en mange à toutes les sauces. Le concept de “collaboration” selon http://reflectionskmoi.blogspot.com/2009/12/8-things-you-need-to-know-about.html (via Stephen’s Lighthouse), un éclairage intéressant:

1. Collaboration is over used and mis-used and is becoming a buzzword for business people and technologists alike
2. Collaboration isn’t the same as cooperation or coordination – each have different processes, practices and depth of engagement
3. Collaboration is a human process – throwing technology at people won’t magically/automatically create collaboration
4. Meaningful, productive collaboration won’t happen without mutuality of desired outcomes, shared values of transparency and information sharing, compassion, compromise
5. Collaboration implies that “the needs of the many, outweigh the needs of the few or the needs of the one” and sometimes people aren’t really interested in living by that principle
6. Collaboration isn’t always the best process
7. Collaboration is not equal to Web 2.0
8. Collaboration can be a source of real value in the face of complex environments and situations where no single person has the right answer
